Grade: A- Your essay is well researched, and you clearly know a lot about both Hirsch's original concept and the controversies swirling around his argument for cultural literacy. Your essay is also well organized in a manner that leads point by point to a logical conclusion. This was a difficult topic because we had not discussed it in class when you wrote this essay. The only weakness is in your technical use of quotes, quotation marks, and citations. All block quotes are double-spaced and are never placed in quotation marks. Place your quotation marks at the end of quotes right after the quoted passage, not after the page number. Come in to my office with your essay and we can discuss some of this. If you want to, you may edit the quotes and your use of quotation marks and resubmit your essay by e-mail within one week if you want to try to improve the grade (move it up to an A). An A- is still a good grade and this editing option is truly optional.
